TRAUMAPHYSIO’S AMPUTEE PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICE

TraumaPhysio supports clients following both upper and lower limb amputations to realise their life goals.

Our specialist amputee physiotherapists are experienced in the assessment and treatment of people following limb loss, working collaboratively with prosthetic providers and within community-based multidisciplinary teams to support, prepare and rehabilitate clients who are considering or who have undergone amputation.

TraumaPhysio’s amputee rehabilitation service provides functional, goal directed therapy to help clients’ return to meaningful, value-based lives and activities. We work with clients within their homes and in the community to advise, plan and deliver effective interventions to address specific issues and progress towards ‘real-world’ activities and goals. We pride ourselves on supporting clients to make aspirational but considered goals using a range of techniques to empower them in their recovery.

WHY US FOR AMPUTATION PHYSIOTHERAPY?

We know that for rehabilitation to be successful it needs to extend beyond the clinic. This is why we provide treatment to our clients in environments meaningful to them.

Our tailored packages cater to each client’s unique needs. Community amputee rehabilitation enables improved goal setting whilst prioritising helping the client to use their prosthesis effectively.

We help people return to their daily activities and places where they can interact more with those who matter most.

CAN TRAUMAPHYSIO HELP?

We can help with pre-amputation preparation, post-amputation recovery, daily life improvements, and high-level sports activities. Our programmes are designed to cater for people at any stage of their journey.

Our amputee physios are vastly experienced in working with the latest prosthetic technology. This includes microprocessor feet and knees, body-powered hands, myoelectric hands, and active parts like blades and hybrid feet. This training will enhance your client’s proficiency with their prosthetic device, allowing them to get back to the activities they love.

We work closely with prosthetic providers nationwide to ensure that each client can get the most out of their prostheses. Our physiotherapists’ experience, along with these partnerships, helps us keep up with the latest in prosthetic technology. Our clinicians can provide effective rehabilitation for people with any level of amputation. This applies to all types of prostheses.

CLIENT FOCUSED AMPUTEE REHAB

TraumaPhysio provides comprehensive assessments, focusing on understanding the issues faced from the client’s perspective.

To gain a thorough understanding of the client’s physical capability we will record a range of measures to clearly understand their current situation. Our physiotherapists use client reported outcome measures to ensure the treatment impacts on the person’s perception of their ability, as well as their physical function.

Understanding how their amputation affects their daily life is crucial for us, so our assessments cover multiple areas. This includes analysing their movement and identifying activities and interests that matter to them.

Our assessment progress is ongoing and provides the basis for the generation of an individualised rehabilitation programme. This ensures that the treatment received by our clients remains meaningful and focused.

We recognise that there can sometimes be a disconnect between physical improvements and returning to important activities and pursuits. We adopt an empowering approach to help clients to identify value-based pursuits and break down perceived barriers. Alongside appropriate prosthetic provision, TraumaPhysio have helped people to return to various leisure pursuits. This includes walking, hiking, gardening, cycling, running, snowsports, climbing, and kayaking amongst many others.

PROSTHETIC TRAINING FOR AMPUTEES

Prosthetic Rehabilitation: Empowering Patients to Embrace a New Normal

Prosthetic rehabilitation is a specialist branch of physiotherapy that focuses on helping individuals with amputation or congenital limb deficiencies to adjust to their prostheses. This physio process helps to improve a person’s abilities and quality of life when using prostheses.

Prosthetic rehabilitation not only focuses on the physical aspects of adjusting to a prosthesis, but it also addresses the psychological and emotional components. We work closely with our patients to help them overcome challenges and build confidence in their abilities.

Through prosthetic rehabilitation, patients can:

  • Regain independence: With specialist instruction, training and practice, individuals can learn how to use their prostheses effectively to improve their quality of life.
  • Improve mobility: Our physiotherapists work on improving balance, strength, and functional ability to help patients move confidently and comfortably with their prosthesis.
  • Reduce pain and discomfort: Adjusting to a prosthesis takes time, but our team can collaborate closely with the prosthetic providers to help optimise comfort.
  • Improve overall well-being: Prosthetic rehabilitation can boost mental health through raising self-esteem, and encourage social interaction.

Prosthetic rehabilitation in the community goes beyond just physiotherapy sessions. The focus is on empowering individuals with limb loss to adapt, overcome challenges, and embrace a new normal. The team at TraumaPhysio are here to help every step of the way.

NON-PROSTHETIC REHAB

Amputee Rehabilitation for Non-Prosthetic Users: How TraumaPhysio Services Can Help

Amputation can be a life-changing event that presents numerous challenges for the individual. While prosthetic rehabilitation is often the primary focus, it may not be suitable or desired by all amputees. In such cases, we can play a crucial role in helping people adapt and regain their independence as a wheelchair user.

Physiotherapists can provide valuable support and guidance to those that have chosen not to use prosthetics. We design programmes to help individuals to optimise their function and minimise the risk of developing secondary complications.

Non-prosthetic rehab can help with the following:

  • Regaining Independence: TraumaPhysio therapists create tailored rehabilitation plans to help individuals perform daily tasks independently, enhancing their quality of life and sense of control.
  • Community Reintegration: Our therapists support individuals in rejoining social activities and discovering new hobbies to boost their mental and emotional well-being.
  • Exploring New Activities: We help clients find and adapt to new interests, promoting a fulfilling and active lifestyle.

PRE-AMPUTATION PHYSIO

Prehabilitation: The Importance of Physiotherapy Before Elective Amputation Surgery

At TraumaPhysio, we specialise in providing physiotherapy support to individuals following complex upper and lower limb injuries. We know that following some injuries the decision may be made to electively amputate a limb, sometimes many years after the initial injury.

Our goal is to support our clients throughout their entire journey. Physiotherapy prior to surgery is the first step in rehabilitation. It may seem strange to undergo physiotherapy before amputation surgery. However, there are numerous benefits for the well-being of the client:

  • Physical benefits:
        • Improved muscle strength
        • Increased flexibility
        • Better cardiovascular health
        • Improved functional ability post-surgery
  • Psychological benefits:
        • Increased feeling of control
        • Reduced anxiety
        • Building a support network

UPPER LIMB AMPUTATION

TraumaPhysio: Empowering Patients Following Upper Limb Amputation

We know that upper limb amputation can greatly affect a person’s physical and emotional health. This is why we offer specialist physiotherapy support to help our patients improve their quality of life.

Physiotherapy is a hugely beneficial but often overlooked part of the rehabilitation process for individuals who have undergone upper limb amputation. Our expert team is trained to work with patients after upper limb amputation and have experience with both body-powered and myoelectric prostheses. This allows us to provide personalised training and support to help them adapt to their new prosthesis.

Testimonials

See what our customers have to say about us...

Helen worked with my 88 year old Mum following her knee replacement. I was very very impressed. Personable, knowledgeable, supportive, she got my Mum full mobilised and back playing bowls. She had her operation in November 2018 and was she was back playing bowls in January 2019. My Mum has now had a refurbishment of her replacement hip and I have no hesitation in going back to her and recommending her to others.

Andrew Mcculloch

An inner ear problem last July that developed into vestibular neuritis led to problems with the muscles, nerves and joints in my neck which caused nausea, dizziness, vision problems as well as the usual aches and pain. In February I came to the Physio4 You team in despair. Rachel did a thorough vestibular assessment and was able to reassure me that the vestibular problem was resolved. I was then given Helen’s details for the neck issues. She has been a real Godsend. She is calm, friendly, reassuring and professional. After a thorough exam in which she listened carefully to my history of symptoms, she took time to explain what the problem was and a plan for treatment going forward. This problem has caused me real anxiety at times. She set my mind at rest that I will get better. I am still undergoing treatment but there has been a vast improvement. She takes time to answer all my questions and I always leave feeling so positive. I would thoroughly recommend their services
