Amputee Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation for clients following limb loss.

TraumaPhysio supports clients following both upper and lower limb amputations to realise their life goals.

Our specialist amputee physiotherapists are experienced in the assessment and treatment of people following limb loss, working collaboratively with prosthetic providers and within community-based multidisciplinary teams to support, prepare and rehabilitate clients who are considering or who have undergone amputation.

TraumaPhysio’s amputee rehabilitation service provides functional, goal directed therapy to help clients’ return to meaningful, value-based lives and activities. We work with clients within their homes and in the community to advise, plan and deliver effective interventions to address specific issues and progress towards ‘real-world’ activities and goals. We pride ourselves on supporting clients to make aspirational but considered goals using a range of techniques to empower them in their recovery.

We know that for rehabilitation to be successful it needs to extend beyond the clinic, which is why we provide treatment to our clients in environments meaningful to them. Our tailored packages cater to each client’s unique needs, and community amputee rehabilitation enables improved goal setting whilst prioritising helping the client to use their prosthesis effectively. We facilitate a return to the activities and places that allow for greater interaction with the people that matter most to them.

Whether it’s pre-amputation preparation, post-amputation recovery, improving day to day life or high-level sporting activities, our personalised programmes are designed to cater for your clients at any stage of their journey.

TraumaPhysio’s amputee physiotherapists are experienced in working with the latest prosthetic technology including microprocessor feet and knees, body powered and myoelectric hands and high activity components like blades and hybrid feet. This training will enhance your client’s confidence and proficiency with their prosthetic device, allowing them to regain independence and resume the activities that are most important to them.

We work closely with prosthetic providers nationwide to ensure that each client can get the most out of their prostheses. Our physiotherapist’s experience, in tandem with these partnerships, enables us to stay up to date with the latest advancements in prosthetic technology. This ensures that our clinicians are equipped to provide the most effective rehabilitation for individuals with any level of amputation, regardless of the type of prosthesis used.

TraumaPhysio provide comprehensive assessments, focusing on understanding the issues faced from the client’s perspective which helps to guide the physical assessment.

To gain a thorough understanding of the client’s physical capability we will record a range of measures to clearly understand their current situation. Our physiotherapist’s use client reported outcome measures to ensure the treatment impacts on the person’s perception of their ability, as well as their physical function. It’s important for us to understand the real-world impact of their amputation and our assessments are therefore multifaceted, including analysing the way that clients move and identifying activities and interests important to them.

Our assessment progress is ongoing and provides the basis for the generation of an individualised rehabilitation programme to ensure that the treatment received by our clients remains meaningful and focused, in what can often be changing circumstances.

We recognise that there can sometimes be a disconnect between physical improvements and returning to important activities and pursuits. We adopt an empowering approach to help clients to identify value-based pursuits and break down perceived barriers. Alongside appropriate prosthetic provision TraumaPhysio have helped people to return to various leisure pursuits including walking, hiking, gardening, cycling, running, snowsports, climbing, kayaking amongst many others.

See what our customers have to say about us...

Helen worked with my 88 year old Mum following her knee replacement. I was very very impressed. Personable, knowledgeable, supportive, she got my Mum full mobilised and back playing bowls. She had her operation in November 2018 and was she was back playing bowls in January 2019. My Mum has now had a refurbishment of her replacement hip and I have no hesitation in going back to her and recommending her to others.

An inner ear problem last July that developed into vestibular neuritis led to problems with the muscles, nerves and joints in my neck which caused nausea, dizziness, vision problems as well as the usual aches and pain. In February I came to the Physio4 You team in despair. Rachel did a thorough vestibular assessment and was able to reassure me that the vestibular problem was resolved. I was then given Helen’s details for the neck issues. She has been a real Godsend. She is calm, friendly, reassuring and professional. After a thorough exam in which she listened carefully to my history of symptoms, she took time to explain what the problem was and a plan for treatment going forward. This problem has caused me real anxiety at times. She set my mind at rest that I will get better. I am still undergoing treatment but there has been a vast improvement. She takes time to answer all my questions and I always leave feeling so positive. I would thoroughly recommend their services
